Best Local Dog Parks to Take Your Pet

Pets, especially dogs, are a part of many Towne Lake and Woodstock families. While there are many great places like Hobgood Park and the many sidewalks within the Towne Lake communities to walk dogs, sometimes it’s nice to let dogs roam free in the secure surroundings of a dog park.

Dog parks can be great places for dogs to socialize and get exercise. Owners tend to be friendly and do their share of socializing as well, so it’s a win-win for everyone!

So why don’t you take your furry family members to one or more of these dog parks that Ursula & Associates has compiled for you?

Woofstock – Located just outside the downtown Woodstock area, this is a very popular park, especially on weekends. Woofstock is also the closest dog part to the Towne Lake community.

It contains separate, fenced areas for large and small dogs, a paved walking path and restrooms. The dog parks have been smartly lined with wood chips so there’s no need to worry about taking your dog there after a heavy rain. Each fenced area also has benches and a few obstacle course items for training.

Leita Thompson Memorial Dog Park – Located at 1355 Woodstock Road in Roswell, it’s accessible to Woodstock and Towne Lake residents by taking Hwy. 92 east toward Roswell. Hwy. 92 changes names several times along the way and, at one point, is called Woodstock Road. This dog park has an enclosed dog area, benches, walking trails and water spigots.

Sweat Mountain Dog Park – While it officially has a Marietta mailing address at 4346 Steinhauer Road, the distance is easy to drive from the Towne Lake area. Opened in 2006, Sweat Mountain Dog Park was the first such park in Cobb County. This dog park has separate small and large dog areas, bark chip ground covering, numerous shade trees, drinking water, restrooms and benches.

Frank Boone Dog Park at Swift-Cantrell Park  – Old 41 Hwy. NW, Kennesaw. Opened in 2008, Swift-Cantrell has large and small dog park areas and a dog wash area as part of its 1.4 acre dog park. It’s part of the larger Swift-Cantrell Park, which boasts many amenities on 130 acres. Restroom facilities are also available. It’s managed by the City of Kennesaw.

Waggy World Paw Park at Wills Park – Located in Alpharetta at 175 Roswell Street, it’s managed by the City of Alpharetta. Wills Park is a well-known outdoor recreation area in the region, with walking trails, baseball fields, outdoor pool, horse area and much more. The dog park is actually a bit hidden at this park, tucked away past a couple ball fields and a decent walk from the main parking lot. It, too, has separate areas for large and small dogs. Be warned though, that this is probably not the park to go to after heavy rains (unless, of course, you don’t mind a muddy dog getting back in your car)!

Before closing, we also wanted to mention a future dog park that will be easily accessible to Towne Lake and Woodstock residents. The new dog park will be part of Patriots Park, which just broke ground for development in the last month. Patriots Park will be situated on nearly 33 acres along Kellogg Creek Road just west of Bells Ferry Road in unincorporated Cherokee County. It will be run by Cherokee Recreation and Parks.

Patriots Park will contain two natural grass baseball/softball diamonds, two fenced off-leash dog areas, a fully accessible and inclusive playground, a paved walking path throughout the park, a concession building and restrooms, and an adaptive use baseball/softball diamond. The goal is to have Patriots Park completed and opened sometime this fall.
