Labor Day is almost upon us and this has traditionally been considered the end of summer. So what is there to do in the coming days?

Well, outdoor pools tend to close after Labor Day. The Cherokee Aquatic Center’s outdoor pool and lazy river area, The Oasis, in Holly Springs, will be open this weekend and Monday. Open 10 am to 7 pm with the final day of the 2016 being Monday, Sept. 5.

The weekly Friday Night Live event in downtown Woodstock this Friday, Sept. 2, will be themed as 50s night. It takes place from 6-9 pm and downtown merchants stay open late.

Want to see a compact car demo derby? Then you need to head to Dixie Speedway  in Woodstock on Saturday, Sept. 3, 2016. They also plan to have a full racing program that evening as well as on Sunday, Sept. 4. See website for complete details.

The Outlet Shoppes at Atlanta, located just off I-575 in Woodstock, will be hosting a big Labor Day weekend sales event through Monday. They even plan to be open from 10 am to 9 pm on Labor Day.

Just outside of Cherokee County, downtown Marietta will be hosting the 30th Annual Marietta Art In the Park at Historic Marietta Square. This year’s event hosts 175 artists, plus activities for the whole family, including music, chalk art, and more.

Really looking to escape metro Atlanta altogether for the day or weekend? Then head south to check out the 18th Annual Sky High Hot Air Balloon Festival at Callaway Gardens.   The festival includes daytime flying exhibitions, a car show, beach activities, a night time “glow” event, and opportunities for guests to take a ride in a tethered hot air balloon.

Or head to the mountains, about an hour north, and attend a new barbecue festival in Ellijay. Smokin’ Up the Mountains is being held on Saturday, September 3, from noon until 8 p.m.The event features barbecue vendors, a barbecue competition (sanctioned by the Georgia Barbecue Association), craft beer, live music and family-friendly activities. $5 admission for adults.

Keep this in mind for going into Atlanta…

And if you’re venturing into Atlanta for other events this weekend, such as the first game of the season for the  University of Georgia, which is being held at the Georgia Dome late Saturday afternoon, bring your patience and allow a lot of extra time. In addition to this game, the downtown area is hosting Dragon Con, an annual event that typically draws more than 70,000 people, the Braves are in town with games this weekend, there’s an AC/DC concert at Philips Arena and the downtown attractions like the World of Coca-Cola and the Georgia Aquarium are always big draws. One news source is reporting that 500,000 people are expected in the downtown area this weekend. That’s a lot of cars!

Whatever your plans this Labor Day weekend, we here at Ursula & Associates wish you a fantastic, fun-filled, end of summer weekend!
