Quick Guide to Performing Arts in the Area

Enjoying a concert, play or other performing arts doesn’t have to mean paying top dollar or driving clear to downtown Atlanta or beyond.  Ursula & Associates is pleased to offer this list of  hidden gems right here in Cherokee County. Other venues in places like Kennesaw, Roswell and Alpharetta are within easy driving distance.

In the heart of downtown Woodstock is the Elm Street Cultural Arts Village.  The arts center is about bringing professional quality, live theatre to Cherokee County residents.  It also offers classes for all ages and workshops.

A brief drive north of Woodstock, consider visiting Reinhardt University’s Falany Performing Arts Center. You will have the opportunity to support the arts, higher education and get an early peek at the talent of tomorrow.  The concert hall is a state-of-the-art, acoustic and tunable stage offering an intimate performance experience. Here is just a sampling of the upcoming events at Reinhardt:

February 25 7 Bridges: The Ultimate Eagle Experience concert
March 15  The Celtic Tenors
April 8-10 “The Mystery of Edwin Drood” presented by the University Music Theatre
April 12 The University Jazz Ensemble
May 20 The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra

A few exits south of Towne Lake, is Kennesaw State University. One of the largest universities in the state, the gem of its College of the Arts program is the Bailey Performance Center. It seats several hundred and has developed a reputation for its outstanding acoustics and the variety of programs. KSU has additional performing arts facilities such as Onyx Theater, Stillwell Theater and the Zuckerman Museum of Art. It’s College of Music has one of the few all Steinway piano programs in the Southeast.
While almost a week doesn’t go by without KSU having some performing arts program or another, keep in mind the schedule revolves around the school year. A sampling of upcoming events include:
Feb. 20-May 21 Art AIDS America exhibition
March 9-13 and March 16-20 Little Shop of Horrors
March 17 Symphony Orchestra and Wind Ensemble
April 1 Atlanta Symphony Orchestra
April 20 Gospel Choir (a free concert)
April 23 Spring Arts Festival
April 22-23 Student Dance Concert
May 1 Musical Theatre Showcase (free theatre performance)
The Earl Smith Strand Theatre in downtown Marietta hosts concerts, musicals, theatrical productions, replaying classic movies on the big screen, and open mike music and comedy nights. Upcoming events include:

February 13 Casablanca, replayed on the big screen
March 13 Ben-Hur
April 9 Departure, The Journey Tribute Band

The Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre – located just off Interstate 75 in South Cobb, is the furthest away from Towne Lake of all the listings here.  Some big name performers have held concerts here and other performances such as musicals, comedy shows and holiday programs are not uncommon.  Upcoming performances include Vince Gill, Lyle Lovett, Bill Maher, Tracy Morgan, Atlanta Ballet, The Pirates of Penzance opera and Menopause the Musical.

To the east of Woodstock, head to Roswell for the Georgia Ensemble Theatre and Conservatory. It is a thriving, active and creative arts community, known as a pre-eminent professional theatre company in Georgia.

In Alpharetta, there’s the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre at Encore Park. This outdoor venue has some well-known performers coming to its spring and summer concert schedule, including people like Keith Urban, Darius Rucker, Styx and 38 Special. It is a relatively new facility with plenty of parking and the convenience of offering free parking passes with concert ticket purchase.

So the next time you are looking for something fun to do in the area, check out one of these performing arts venues, all within a half hour of the Towne Lake/Woodstock area. It’s yet another reason to live in the northern metro Atlanta area.
