Top Local Summer Camps for the Kids
Your children are, no doubt, in countdown mode for summer vacation. You may not be quite so enthusiastic if your Cherokee County household features two working parents. How will you entertain the kids all summer?
Below, is a list of summer camps and activities that might be of interest to one or more of your children. Some of these are booking up quickly, so don’t delay in making reservations for these now. Plan ahead now so you don’t have to hear the dreaded “I’m bored” complaints.

Camp Gideon is a Christian camp and retreat facility located on Lake Allatoona in Acworth.
Camps: Impact Week is June 18-24 for ages 12+; Discovery Day Camp is June 20-24 for ages 5-11. They also have a week-long overnight camping trip for ages 7-13 and an Impact Leadership Program for ages 11 and up that is available year-round.

Located at 201 E. Bells Ferry Road in Woodstock, the Y has dozens of different summer classes and camps for kids as young as pre-k through 10th grade. You can choose from full camp, specialty or teen camps. The specialty camps include topics such as arts and crafts, horseback riding, sports, science and princess camps.
The site does a good job of allowing you to search by interest and age. It shows complete pricing as well as how many spots are still available for each session. A parent handbook or summer camp guide can be viewed or downloaded as a pdf.
Day camps are also available at the Canton YMCA at 151 Waleska Street in Canton.
Offers week-long camps for children of all ages and abilities. Camp dates are: June 8-11, June 22-25, July 13-16, July 20-23 and July 27-30. Registration can conveniently be done online at the website.
It’s located at 155 Brooke Blvd., Woodstock, just north of downtown area on Hwy. 5. The club also offers private and group lessons, weekly drop-in drills, Adult/Junior League play, CARDIO/beginner tennis classes, racquet stringing and more. The Cherokee Tennis Center is also home to TOP Tennis Academy, a high performance junior tennis program.
They will be offering summer art camp for kids as young as two. It’s located at 6687 Bells Ferry Road in Woodstock. All camps meet Tuesdays-Thursdays from 1 to 4 p.m. with the option of adding an additional hour. These camps will be mixed media, meaning children will work in different arts areas such as collage, assemblage, painting and sketching. Cost of camps includes all instruction, materials and summer camp t-shirt.
Located close to Towne Lake at 105 Arnold Mill Park in Woodstock, the summer camp goes way beyond gymnastics. It also offers convenience for parents, offering half or full day programs. Day Camps run Tuesday May 31, 2016 – Friday July 29, 2016.
During camp each day, kids do gymnastics, arts and crafts, outdoor games, indoor games, sprinkler time, watch movies, as well as quiet time to read, rest or play alone. Day Camp is designed to provide working families with an alternative to day care, while still offering great flexbility. You choose the days, weeks, and times you need with no financial penalty. You can send your child for one week, one day every week, or on any other schedule that suits your needs.
Numerous themed camps will be taking place this summer through CRPA. One unique camp is the Summer Harmony Lacrosse Camp for boys and girls aged 7 to 18 from May 31 to June 3.
They will also be offering fishing camp twice during June for ages 8 to 14, sports camps, a teen adventure camp for ages 13 to 15 and other programs.
This weekly summer camp takes place Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Your kids can go by the day, the week or the entire summer. Camp is for ages 4 to 9. The church bills it as “an expedition and adventure day camp for kids.” Conveniently located in Towne Lake at 132 North Medical Parkway.
Elm Street Cultural Arts Village has one of the oldest and largest arts education programs for young people in the region. Camps are taught by trained counselors who introduce ages 5-14 to the exciting world of the theatre. Campers explore the craft of acting and learn the discipline of performing, as they develop their own unique creative voices. There are seven different weeks of camp available and they meet weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 8534 Main Street in Woodstock.
They also have a Teen Improv Camp where all campers receive a t-shirt, script and private access to a downloadable digital copy of their final performance.
All summer classes and camps begin in June. Many are themed around various storybooks. Dance Imagination is located at 119 Mill Street in Woodstock.
